Job Summary

Harley-Davidson is on a mission to the lead the electrification of the Motorcycle Industry and is excited to open our Silicon Valley Product Development Innovation Center focused on EV Systems. We are looking for a Senior Battery Systems Engineer to help drive the innovation, design and development of EV batteries for H-D s portfolio of electric vehicles.

Job Responsibilities

Maintain a dedicated and focused battery systems engineering paradigm that connects the cell, module, battery and vehicle systems together to deliver optimal performance to our customers. Striving to become the lead battery technical architect or guru, you will:

Lead, design, specify, execute (hands-on) and manage a wide range of cell-based work streams related to:
- supplier benchmarking
- algorithm calibration generation
- cycle life
- calendar life
- abuse and safety
- mechanical tolerance
- X-ray computed tomography
- teardown analysis
- scanning electron microscopy
- energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy
- accelerating-rate calorimetry
- specific heat capacity, radial thermal conductivity, axial thermal conductivity
- venting gas analysis
- electrode metrology
- Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of separator
- manufacturing beginning-of-line cell quality check
Lead, design, specify, execute (hands-on) and manage a wide range of module and battery development work streams related to:
- manufacturing end-of-line test system development
- electrical and thermal performance
- battery thermal management system
- algorithm verification and validation
- abuse and safety
- electrical cycle life
- mechanical durability cycles and their interactions with the electrical system
- cell inter-connect method development, quality control and analysis
- software-in-loop
- hardware-in-loop
- design-for-manufacturing, cost reduction
Lead, design, specify, execute (hands-on) and manage a wide range of battery-targeted vehicle work streams related to:
- performance (power capabilities, range, thermal performance)
- life and durability
- algorithm verification and validation
- field data analysis, warranty definitions
Develop models, software and tools that enable
- battery system optimization
- algorithms to unlock the full potential of the battery
- evaluation of trade-offs between battery life and performance
Optimize performance, cost and life of the battery by
- driving cell, module and battery design concepts that can be rapidly tested or simulated
- striving for the removal of design complexity and minimization of cost
- actively collaborating with mechanical, electrical, manufacturing and software teams
- demonstrating design trade-offs via a combination of modeling, testing and in-situ field data

  • This position requires a Bachelor s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical Degree. Master s Degree in Engineering Preferred.

Experience Requirements

5 years of demonstrated experience in automotive battery development (production, not prototype). Tell us about the production battery that you work on, how you contributed to it and why you made it a successful, value-creating product.
Five or more years of automotive battery field experience. Deep understanding of the key cell, module and battery design elements that result in successful field deployment of automotive batteries. Tell us about the battery field issues you have encountered, how you worked to resolve them and what you would do differently if you had the opportunity.
Deep understanding of the battery system s underlying physics, primary functions and how it can be optimized to drive customer-valued differentiation and business value. Will serve as the systems technical guide and knowledge resource for battery mechanical design, battery thermal design, battery electrical design, battery safety design, battery control design and battery functional performance. Your extensive experience will enable you to execute and contribute in any of these sub-disciplines.
Demonstrated experience 2-3 years in model-based systems design: (i) model development and execution in MATLAB/Simulink, Python, PLECS, Sabre, Dymola, COMSOL multi-physics, ANSYS, other
Demonstrated experience 2-3 years in applied data science: (i) Python (numpy, pandas), (ii) database development and management (mySQL, Postgres, other), (iii) MATLAB/Simulink
Demonstrated experience 2-3 years in (i) maintaining and operating cell cycling equipment, (ii) writing cell testing scripts (Arbin, Maccor, Bitrode, etc.), (iii) maintaining and operating module and battery cycling equipment (NH research, Bitrode, Digatron, other), (iv) maintaining and operating cell/module/battery end-of-line testing equipment, (v) writing and executing end-of-line tests and software, (vi) collecting and analyzing battery-related vehicle data CAN, XCP, other
Demonstrated experience 1-2 years in algorithm design, firmware implementation and testing: (i) software-in-loop and hardware-in-loop, (ii) MATLAB/Simulink, (iii) C/C++, (iv) LabView, (v) other
Experience 1-2 years working with mechanical engineers in CAD tools such as Creo, SolidWorks or other design tools.
Experience 1-2 years working with electrical/electronics engineers in circuit design tools such as Altium.
